The Odyssey is one of the oldest stories in the world dating back to the time of Homer, The author of the story. It is about a noble leader named Odysseus leaving his home Ithaca to go fight in the Trojan War. He and some of his men go on a journey to get back home to his wife and son. It is a long and dreadful journey that he toke. Meanwhile, his wife was at home staying loyal to him eve thought many suitors wanted her hand in marriage.

What did the Greeks value back thousands of years ago? Homer’s story, The Odyssey, shows a possibility. In the story, Homer showed that loyalty was a main value. He portrayed it by Odysseus being loyal to his crew, Odysseus’s workers being loyal to him, and also Odysseus being loyal to Penelope and Ithaca.
In the book, The Odyssey. “...We buried him where the land extended furthest out to sea. Overcome with grief, we shed many tears.”(pg 234) Odysseus and his men we’re in great distress because their fellow comrade had died. Odysseus along with the crew were loyal to the fallen companion because they fell in grief when they had buried him and let him go. “What man with any self-respect would start to eat and drink before he had released his shipmates and could see them face to face? If you are being sincere in asking me to eat and drink, then set my comrades free...”(pg 202) Odysseus was at Circe’s house, he went back to save his men when the witch had turned them into pigs. He wouldn’t eat her food because of the worry of saving his crewmates. Odysseus was loyal to his crew because his mind was worried and in great pursuit to free his men.
Another way that Homer had portrayed loyal in the story was by Odysseus’s workers being loyal to Odysseus. “I'm full of sorrow for my noble master,
who's probably going hungry somewhere...”(pg 270) Eumaeus when walked up to Odysseus when he was disguised as a old man had said he worries about his master which was Odysseus. “Oh Father Zeus, would that you might fulfill this very wish— may that man come, and led on by some god. then you would know the kind of strength I have and how my hands can show my power.”(pg 419) Odysseus has asked the workers if they would fight by Odysseus side or the suitor’s side, they said they would fight with Odysseus. Odysseus’s workers were very loyal to Odysseus throughout the entire book, not just by doing as asked by him but with also fighting along his side.
Odysseus was also very loyal to his home, Ithaca and to his wife, Penelope. “But Odysseus yearns to see even the smoke rising from his native land and longs for death.”(pg 10) When Odysseus was trapped by Calypso, he was full of distress because he couldn’t go back to his homeland, Ithaca. “Circe, grant me the promise which you made 620 to send me home. My spirit's keen to leave...”(pg 204) Odysseus spoke this quote after his crew told him that it was time to head home. Odysseus agreed and headed straight for Circe and asked her to leave because he was missing his home and his wife. Odysseus showed many examples of being loyal to his homeland, Ithaca and his wife, Penelope.
