Did you ever wonder who you are? How people describe you? No? Well I haven't either but I have wondered who others are and how you would describe them. I’ve been thinking about Piggy lately. Piggy is a character in the book “Lord of the Flies” written by William Golding. The novel is about a plane filled with elementary school students that have evacuated from their school because of world war two dangers. The plane crashes by an inhabitant island. The only casualty that was made was the death of the pilot, the only adult on the plane. The kids are then left on a inhabitant island with no adult, the challenge for survival emerges. Piggy was a major image in this novel. The main traits that he exhibited was intelligence and emotion. He also acted more as the adult figure in the group.
In the story “Lord of the Flies” Piggy is composed of many traits but one that is really exposed throughout the novel is intelligence. He presented most of the groups knowledge on creating a civilization and order. “I expect we’ll want to know all their names, said the fat boy, and make a list. We ought to have a meeting.”(pg 11) This quote was spoken by Piggy when he and Ralph have found all of the kids on the island. He stated a intelligent start to finding out who is on the island and how many people there is. He wanted to have a meeting to go over what had happened and what they should do next, just like in a civilization. “ Ralph! Ralph looked up. We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They’ll come when they hear us-” (pg 17) Piggy had an idea to use a shell that he and Ralph had found on the beach to call all the other kids to come and have a meeting. Intelligence was shown her because of a simple thought that will gather all of the kids with little effort. It is also a great way to keep track of the kids on the island so they won't get lost. Throughout the novel, Piggy had shown many different traits but one of the most important traits that he had shown was intelligence.
Besides intelligence, Piggy had some other important traits that he portrayed throughout the book, one of the is he was very emotional. “Piggy was… so full of pride in his contribution to the good of society … that he helped to fetch wood.(Chapter 8) Many of the things that Piggy does in the group is an attempt to fit into the society. He has gained pride from little things like collecting wood. His emotions play a great effect on him then because his emotions will drive him to work harder in order to feel a certain feeling. "I don't care what they call me," he said confidentially, "so long as they don't call me what they used to call me in school… They used to call me Piggy!"(Chapter 1) This quote exposed the strong emotional connection that Piggy has with his name. He gains anger and sorrow from the name because of how much he got bullied with it. When telling Ralph he then gained a sense of fear too because he feared his name on the island will end up being Piggy. In the novel, “Lord of the Flies”, Piggy was clearly the biggest portrayer of emotions. In some cases it came to him and the groups advantage and in others it came to become a harmful trait. Regardless of good or bad, it's clear that one of main traits that Piggy expressed was being emotional.
Despite being intelligent and emotional, Piggy played a even bigger role in the civilization of the youth on the island. Since there is no adult on the island, piggy acted as the figure of one. he possesses many of the characteristics that an adult would possess. Physically he is obese, has bad eyesight, and holds harmful medical conditions like asthma. The mental characteristics that Piggy possesses are the most important though, he is a wise, and knowledgeable of what needs to be done to survive."How can you expect to be rescued if you don't put first things first and act proper?"( Chapter 2) Piggy spoke this quote when he was arguing with Jack about what they should do first. Piggy tells Jack something that an adult would most likely say and not a child. He stressing order and proper behavior, something an adult would stress. This made Piggy very important to the group because he is the only one that persuades order in the group.
There are many different views that people have on Piggy in the book, different views as what his role is or different view on his characteristics. “When Piggy dies, the conch is smashed, signifying all the order and control and civilization in the story. Once the conch is smashed all chance of civility is gone to the point of no return. This also marks the end of rational thinking due to the fact that Piggy is the voice of reason.”
(http://thdeathofsimonandpiggy.weebly.com/quotes.html) I found this piece of critizism though on a blog that only talks about the death of Piggy and another fallen character named Simon. The bloggers name is unstated but the quote the he responded too is this. "The rock struck Piggy a glancing blow from chin to knee: the conch exploded into a thousand white fragments and ceased to exist. Piggy, saying nothing, with no time for even a grunt, traveled through the air sideways from the rock, turning over as he went. Piggy fell 40 feet and landed on his back across the the square red rock in the sea. His head opened and stuff came out and turned red. Piggy's arms and legs twitched a bit, like a pigs after it has been killed" I agree with this piece of criticism because going into the story, Piggy was the only one that stressed that idea of order in the group and the conch that also smashed along with Piggy was the only object that resembled order. Without the two providers of order, no order can be found. “Piggy at last claims what they had committed was murder, however, none of the boys on the island find it so. This is due to the fact that the island no longer has any laws and the boys have been stripped of a moral sense of justice that they no longer see it as murder. Only Piggy, the only intellectual left on the island, is able to see that their act was irrational and unacceptable in society.”(http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=11&ved=0CB0QFjAAOAo&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.thhs.qc.edu%2Fourpages%2Fauto%2F2012%2F5%2F7%2F55622141%2FLord%2520of%2520the%2520Flies.docx&ei=LPYeVIXPO6H6iwKo84CgCQ&usg=AFQjCNHBmgrAx-R5PZyhRL8D90v-JWpVKQ&sig2=540t0iPeasV2aKj3qmXWxw) This quoted critizism is written by Yerim Jee, Shaleen Singha, and Judith Suzuki. They are college students that wrote a book analysis for “Lord of the Flies.” It is in response to the quote “That was murder.” This was said by Piggy when the children had murdered Simon. No one had agreed with Piggy when he had side that though. I agree with Yerim, Shaleen, and Judith. Since there is no order and laws, there is no justice. With no justice, low morals will thrive in a population. This is another way that describes Piggy as the peace holder of the population.
In the book “Lord of the Flies” by William Golding, hell had broken loose because of lack of order. Civilization had ceased to exist, and the fight for survival had flourished. Piggy was the only hope for civilization in the chaos that the children had created due to the lack of older authority. Piggy demonstrated many traits in this novel but the major ones that he exposed are intelligence and emotion along with represent the adult figure in the group.
