Growth and Development Reflections
Part 1
This year, I believed that I improved the most in my comprehension when it comes to mathematics. Just like last year, we learned a lot of concepts that I was not familiar with and had trouble understanding how to use it. However the difference between last semester and the current semester is that I understand the material much easier this year. I believe it is mostly because of my time management, another aspect that I improved on. My biggest accomplishment this year is the amount of effort I put into my work. For both the lessons and projects, I devoted more time and effort to perfecting and further comprehending. I used outside sources like khan academy more this semester compared to last year. In the classroom however, I don’t necessarily know how I contributed. This semester, I feel like I participated less than last semester and only collaborated with my group the minimum. That is an aspect that I need to improve on next year because collaboration is incorporated in both of my internship, meaning I have to get familiar with it!
Part 2
This semester, I made my biggest improvement in the amount of effort is exerted in understanding the mathematical concepts and perfecting the work I do in my projects. I think the best examples that reflect this are my math tests. Looking at the scores I received, I did fairly well. Reflecting on the standards of mathematical practice, I improved the most in making sense of problems and persevering to solving them. This semester, we received difficult material to absorb. In addition, the resource that we received to help us learn it, was also hard to understand. This resulted in me, as well as many other students, to use outside sources to help us understand the material. These sources include Khan Academy and Youtube. This semester, the most rewarding concept that I learned was solving triangles with trigonometry. This is because trigonometry is a bit of a puzzle when solving it, making it fun, and in addition, they are commonly used in real world scenarios.
Unfortunately, I don’t feel like I contributed enough to the classroom this semester. Comparing this semester to last semester, I have contributed less to the classroom. This is not necessarily because last semester I was a TA but rather I asked more questions and offered to answer questions more. This semester, I feel like I kept silent and focused on my own work. I still payed attention during the lessons however I didn’t exert as much effort as I did last semester to comprehending it. I guess that is because I imagined that I would have an easier time understand from other sources. In group collaboration, I would say that I did the minimum. I communicated with my group members whenever it was necessary and I usually plugged in headphones whenever I was not communicating. I helped my group members whenever they asked for it however I never offered to help. I however did contribute a to a majority of the planning for our Sine City parcel of land, I made majority of the calculation but I wish that I would have listened more to my group members opinions in the design of the parcel.
The biggest challenge that I believe I faced this year was in the Sine City project. By getting off to an uncertain start with the wrong measurements of our parcel, it was hard to build enthusiasm for the project. It caused my group to change our design for our land multiple times uprising a lot of frustration between us. Even though it was difficult to use to change our attitude to the project, we eventually did when we started to progress through our problem and by seeing the amount of work come together. What we could have done better as a group and as individual is to prepare ourselves more. With the material that we were given to read before hand, we should have placed more effort in noting the information that was in them. I also would have liked to contribute more time to confirming the size of our land to enhance our productivity. The aspect that I believe I placed the least amount of effort into was the Adobe Illustrator portion of the Sine City project. I’m not a huge fan of graphic design and didn’t exert much effort into it. I feel if I place more effort into the work I was doing on Illustrator, my product will have been better. For next year, I hope to continue my consistent work habits and to improve my collaboration skills, these can be achieve throughout my internships.
