Introduction To Chemistry
What are Proteins?
Proteins are any organic compounds that are made up of long complex chains of amino acids. They are essential for the well-being of all living organisms. Proteins can be labelled as working proteins. Working means that they are constantly functioning inside the body. Some examples are enzymes, antibodies, and hormones. Each protein in our bodies has a different function.
Where do they come from?
Most of the protein in our body wasn't actually made in our body ironically. We have the ability to produce some of the needed amino acids needed for the production of proteins but most of them we need to receive from elsewhere. The way we receive them are from consumption. We receive the most proteins usually from eating meats such as beef, chicken, turkey, and fish but we can also get them from other things like fruits and vegetables. Essentially anything that we eat contains complete proteins and or essential amino acids that we need to make proteins.
How are Proteins used in our Bodies?
Every bone, organ, tendon, ligament, hair and so much more are made up of proteins. Proteins are the building blocks of virtually almost everything our body contains. Proteins can also be used as boosters in our body that boost a reaction or production of something. These are called enzymes. Proteins that help protect our body from viruses and unwanted bacteria are called antibodies and ones that help transport oxygen through our body are called hemoglobin. Finally proteins that help regulate all body functions are called hormones.

Protein Reflection
Learning about proteins taught me so much about my body. Something that I would take away from this is that protein doesn't have an effect on just building muscle. It affects so much more then that. It affects your production of cells, digestion, respiration and so much more. I also took away that protein is also a big factor to consider when it comes to your daily consumption, it isn't just about the carbs and calories that you absorb from that. The protein in fact is just as much essential. I also took away how few amount of the needed amino acids we can create in our body. The fact that most of our protein comes from eating then from other organisms is very fascinating.
