Persepolis
Did you ever wonder how a little child’s life would change during a time of constant violent acts? Marjane Satrapi’s autobiography, Persepolis speaks what happened to her. Persepolis is a book about Marjane growing up in Iran during the time of the revolution and the war with Iraq. The book starts off with when she was a very small girl and the revolution of Iran is just starting to erupt. Marjane goes through very dramatic changes that evolve around politics, society, and religion.
Marjane’s life was changed in many ways throughout the story; politically she changed a great amount. As for me, I love the king, He was chosen by god. (pg 19) Marjane first was in favor of the shah in the beginning of the book. She was in favor of it because she didn’t really know much about politics and about the shah’s sins. “We demonstrated in the garden of our house. Down with the Shah!!”(pg 10) This was an event that happened near the beginning of the story, she was at a very young age and the hate against the Shah is starting to grow in the country. She first was against the Shah like the common people of Iran because of the dictatorship that he has in place. She was in favor of the revolution at that time and she showed that by roleplaying in her garden with her friends. They acted like they were protesters chanting “Down with the Shah”. These quotes clearly state that a major change in Marjane’s life was political.
Society also had a major effect on Marjane’s life. It really changed her into a different type of person. “Don’t you have class?.. No we got physical education but we’re not going. We’re going for burgers.” (pg 111) This quote was not spoken by Marjane but it has a major influence on her. She was growing up and was around the age of 14 or 15. She heard the bell for class ring but saw some of her friends not leaving for class. She asked them why, they said that they were going to ditch class and go get something to eat. With peer pressure, she went with them to get burgers. It was a significant change because never in her life had she done something near as bad as ditching class. It brought out a piece of rebelliousness in her. “... rebellion against my mother’s dictatorship by smoking the cigarette I’d stole from my uncle...” (pg 116) This was said by Marjane herself. Her rebellious side is growing and she is starting to think of her mother as a dictator. Society is changing her view on her family and order. Marjane rebelling is a big part of her changing as she grows up.
The third huge change in Marjane’s life would be religiously. “At the age of six I already was sure I was the last prophet.”(pg 6) When Marjane was younger, she believe that she was the last prophet cause she though that she got messages from god when she sleeps. At that young age, she really liked religion, this was before the time of the violence in the revolution. “ Marji, what seems to be the problem? Shut up, you! Get out of my life! I never want to see you again! (pg 70) The first part of the quote was spoken by god, he is asking Marjane about how she is doing. Marjane’s respond was the second part and it showed that it was a turning point in Marjane’s life because before she was crazy about god and religion but now she wants it all to go away. Marjane’s life changes enormously because of the topic of religion.
